Chapter 11: Dangerous Alliances

They exited the Tower in silence, two alien moons watching over them along the quiet plaza. A wind swept across the Tower Gardens, but Jason still felt warm from the exertion.

“Well, I must at least say it out loud. I can't believe that man,” Kari hissed, tension bursting out of her like a dam. “He wants to use you, Jason, and you know it.”

Misa eyed her suspiciously. “But for what? Just because of his talents?”

Kari took a deep breath and let it out through her teeth. “I would wager that it’s way more than that.”

Jason raised an eyebrow. Was she going to trust her rival with classified information?

And something seemed to wake up in his mind. Concern. And he was sure it wasn’t actually his own mind. It was someone else.

And she was getting close.

Kari continued. “I don't know exactly why, but it's definitely not in Jason's interest.”

Misa shrugged. “I thought you were all about following the chain of command. You don't look happy about trusting Malkarius. And speaking of that...”

Khalida was striding toward them, fists pressed against her hips.

“Mr. Reynolds.” Her amber eyes swept over their small group. “Miss Vatroslava. Miss Kuroda.”

Jason felt Misa tense beside him. Kari's posture shifted, shoulders squaring.

“Mistress Khalida,” he replied, keeping his voice neutral despite the memory of... everything they had done just the previous night.

“I've heard about today's tower irregularities.” She stopped close enough that Jason caught her perfume. “Unauthorized. Quite concerning.”

“We handled it,” Kari said, her feather markings pulsing. “Malkarius is aware, and we struck a bargain with him.”

“I'm sure you did.” Khalida's gaze lingered on Jason. “And he and I just had a talk. I agree that a more structured oversight would benefit everyone involved. I'd like to become Mr. Reynolds's official instructor for advanced theory and accompany you three during tower climbs.”

It felt as if the temperature had dropped. Misa's ears flattened against her skull, and Jason felt Kari's fire essence flicker.

“His training has been progressing well,” Misa said, her voice carrying an edge. “Without... official instruction.”

“Has it?” Her gaze swept over Jason. “I believe my personal instruction has played a part in his success.”

Kari tensed next to Jason. He could feel her breath tighten.

Khalida's tone remained professionally pleasant, but Jason caught steel underneath. “Listen. The Headmaster's interest in accelerating Mr. Reynolds's development may not align with his welfare.”

She had that part right.

She cared about him; he could feel it deep within his bones. But he didn’t know what the other girls would think.

Something in Khalida’s mind, through their bond, begged Jason to trust her.

Jason looked between the three women. “What exactly are you proposing?” he asked.

Khalida dropped her hands to her sides, as if signaling openness. “I have been trying to convince our Headmaster that I'll be his right-hand woman, watch over your progress, report to him, and see where we're headed. In other words, I will be by your side, protecting you.”

“Protection from what?” Misa's tail had gone completely still.

“From questions about why a first-year has access to restricted areas.
